Not very realistic
It’s highly likely that when you get clear on your vision, lock in some of your big dreams and start your journey towards making your dream life a reality, you’ll get some funny comments, eye-rolls or people saying what they’ve been saying to me for most of my life: ‘Hmm. Not very realistic, is it?’
When I was 15 and dreamed of being an actress, my teachers at school said, ‘That’s nice, Mel, but it’s not very realistic.’
When I dreamed of starting a business, helping women to find freedom around food, some people said, ‘Be realistic: you need a stable job!’
My new life in Bali might sound a bit ‘out there’ to you, but it was once just an idea in my mind – and a computer screensaver that I used to stare at. And I’m not special or different from you; this is possible for anyone, no matter what, or how big, your dreams are. You just have to believe it, and consistently show up for yourself in making them come true.
I grew up in a city with nothing really going on, my family didn’t have a great deal of money and I had no connections or ‘step-ups’ to where I wanted to be – but I had some big-ass dreams and I was prepared to work really, really hard in order to make them come true.
When you believe in yourself and make bold moves, the Universe moves with you. When you support yourself, you will feel supported.
I say this to encourage you to live the life that you want, not the life that others say is ‘realistic’ for them. ‘Realistic’ is governed by a person’s own beliefs and is absolutely no reflection of what is possible for you, in your life. Everything is realistic, if you make it so.
Don’t let small minds convince you
that your dreams are too big.
I spent so long feeling starved of freedom and adventure. And as much as I could blame it on other people or my circumstances, I was there the whole time, and I had chosen that life. I just hadn’t been giving myself a voice, or standing up for what I really wanted deep down in my gut. I’d been burying my feelings, burying my truth, and trying to fit in. I just didn’t want to upset anyone – y’know?
But trying to fit in never, ever works. It makes us miserable and depressed because we were all born to stand out. Why do you think the Universe made us each unique, with different gifts and talents, different genes, a different chemical make-up, different parents? We’re not here to be like anyone else.
If you’re trying to fit into what you think society wants, I’d like you to ask yourself: Why? Who is it exactly that you’re trying to please by doing this? Is it your mum? Your dad? Your spouse? Your boss? The mums in the playground? Whose approval are you trying to win?
When you approve of your own choices, you don’t need others to approve of them.
